Underwater Chinatown

Image from National Archives of Singapore

A large part of the process of creating Underwater Chinatown was in researching historical documents related to Cantonese opera and Cantonese opera houses in Vancouver from the 1890s to the 1920s. Deanne Achong and I visited numerous local archives to peruse their collections and did on-line research in archives from around the world. The research informed the final piece in regard to the history and thematics presented. The visual and aural archives also found their way into the website. The piece was commissioned by Cinevolution Media Arts Society. The website can be found at underwaterchinatown.com
